Growing up in the outback I have many childhood memories that connect to red cracked earth. From playing in the mud after the first rains, to the extreme change in temperature with the shift in seasons and the flaking sunburn after too many hours outside in the heat. The same feeling comes from reading Dorothea Mackellar’s ‘My Country’, with her references to a love of a sunburnt country, of far horizons, droughts and flooding rains.
