Discover the rich history of Japanese paper making and Letterpress printing in this two part workshop.

Workshop 1 at the Midland Junction Arts Centre will be an introduction to paper making using two different styles of Japanese sheet forming: Tamezuki and Nagashizuki. The class will cover moulds, deckles, recycling paper, sheet forming, hand beating, pressing, drying and decorative effects. Having studied and worked at the Washi No Sato Paper making factory in Japan for over 12 years, Ingrid has a wealth of paper making expertise to impart on new students. Bring coloured silk, threads, natural fibres and pressed flowers to use as inclusions.

Workshop 2 at the historic Whiteman Park Print Shop will introduce the basics of Letterpress, covering the basics of hand typesetting to produce your own print using handmade paper from Workshop 1. This historic method of relief printing dates back to the 1400’s and was used to print newspaper, books and other media until the advent of offset printing. In this class students will work to print a simple text-based project, such as a short quote/ one-liner, poem, or greeting card. Bring a short quote/ one-liner/ something simple you would like to print.

Please wear closed in shoes, and bring an apron or old shirt (something you're willing to get pulp and ink on).
